The one true constant...

...is that nothing stays the same. I've ridden past the Woodward building a couple of times since we moved out of there last year. I stopped to take a couple photos this morning on my way home from a ride. Jaunary 1st was the final day the building was open and i imagine demolition will start soon. The good thing is the building likely falls under a certain amount of historic preservation laws, but i seriously doubt that this building will ever be the way that is was to those of us who worked in it for years.
Charles the concierge worked his entire career in that building. Last time we spoke he was retiring and considering heading back to his hometown in South Carolina. I can only imagine what he has seen over the past 40 years in the Woodward.
There are several gaps left by the loss of the retail shops in the lobby. Where will strippers buy their seasonally themed outfits? Will people have to try and find religious books between the racks of crap at Borders rather than from the sweet little Greek guy at the Agape? I noticed that the barber shop has moved to 17th and K- i'm glad to see they found a new space. Not sure about the coffee lady- she and Charles were the heart and soul of the Woodward.
Anyhow- it is sad to see the much fought over bike racks empty, the bikini racks put away for good, and the windows of the Woodward Liquor empty. RIP Woodward- may your past haunt the new residents in those luxury condos- may Mr. Arrington's vast collection of Madonna and Beyonce tunes echo through the halls forever... Posted by Picasa
